Oxford Scholar To Discuss Impact of Religion on Culture

A distinguished Oxford scholar will talk about the role of religion in social life, from the European Enlightenment to the present day, when he visits Washington College on Monday evening, January 31. The lecture by Dr. Nicholas Wood—playfully titled “Do Be Do Be Do,” or “Descartes, Sartre and Sinatra: Religion, Culture and the Modern World”—will take place at 7 p.m. in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall, on the College campus, 300 Washington Avenue. Sponsored by the Washington College Institute for Religion, Politics, and Culture, the event is free and open to the public.

Blackwater NWR Holds 11th Eagle Festival

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is holding its 11th Annual Eagle Festival on Saturday, March 12 from 8am to 4pm. All activities are free, including access to the Wildlife Drive.
The day will begin with a bird walk at 8 am with experienced birder Terry Allen. Programs include live peregrine falcon program and flight demonstration, live bald eagle program, “Wings and Things” live birds of prey program, live raptors program, live owl program, photography workshop.
Three eagle prowls are scheduled throughout the day, with volunteers and staff leading the search for bald eagles throughout the refuge. Participants must register for the eagle prowls on the day of the event, as space is limited.
Kids’ activities will run from 10:30 am until 3 pm while supplies last. Activities include: “build your own” blue bird nest box, owl pellet exploration, eagle puppet construction, make your own wildlife button, design your own wildlife t-shirt, and construct an ‘edible eagle.’ An endangered species puppet show will take place at 10 am and 3 pm. All puppet show attendees will receive a free Albert the Delmarva Fox Squirrel coloring book.
Blackwater NWR’s main Visitor Center is currently closed due to renovation work. Programs and activities will take place in large heated tents located adjacent to the temporary Visitor Center along Wildlife Drive. For information call 410-228-2677 or visit www.fws.gov/blackwater.

The year 2013 marks the 100 years since the death of Underground Railroad 'conductor' Harriet Tubman. Come to this presentation to learn the latest about ongoing projects based on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, including the National Historic Park, the State Park and the byway. The event is free and open to the public and anyone who is interested in learning more or learning how they can participate.

Easton Branch Opens in Temporary Quarters: 28712 Glebe Road
The Easton library has re-opened in the old Black and Decker building at 28712 Glebe Road (across the bypass from Ruby Tuesday’s restaurant). The Temporary quarters will last throughout 2011 until renovations are complete to its original location.
In its new temporary quarters the Easton branch is providing all its regular services, including public computing, Wi-Fi, and lending materials. There will be limited library programming and Maryland Room services. The library will keep its usual winter hours: Monday and Thursday 9-8, Tuesday and Wednesday 9-6, Friday and Saturday 9-5. Make a mask at The Foundry

Mardi Gras Mask Making with Foundry Artists

On Saturday, Feb. 12, 2-4 p.m., The Foundry will host a free mask making activity as part of the Second Saturday series offered at The Foundry, Caroline County Council of Arts’ (CCCA) community art gallery at 401 Market Street in Denton.
This activity is free to the public. Foundry artists will be on hand to help attendees create one-of-a-kind masks in celebration of the CCCA’s Mardi Gras Masqued Ball that will be held on Saturday March 5.  All are encouraged to come out, have fun, and be creative; especially those who would like to make their own mask for the Masqued Ball. Masks and decorative supplies will be provided, and attendees are welcome to bring their own mask to decorate, if they like. For more information please contact the CCCA office 410-479-1009.
Over 40 Caroline County artists’ works are now on display at The Foundry which is open Tuesday through Saturday 11-5. Free demonstrations and activities from a variety of artists are held the second Saturday of every month from 2-4 p.m. Coming next month, Second Saturdays presents an artist demonstration by Foundry artist Joshua Hacker on March 12.
